This turned out to be a huge event! I can’t believe the amount of people that showed up. It was exciting to be a part of it. I finally got to see works from all the other studios in the building. It’s been a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun and all worth it!

who was Sam?

Sam Hyde Harris is one of my favorite plein air painter, and I am very excited to go see his show at the Pasadena Museum of History. One room is dedicated to his commercial work, and the other, his plein air paintings. I didn’t know he had done so much commercial work till this exhibit. I really like all his work and went there twice already to do studies.

What I like about his paintings are that he is really good at subtle colors with temperature differences seen on foggy days or cloudy days. I find it really hard to paint light gray colors without being chalky. He paints really beautiful muddy colors - if you know what I mean.

we walked out of the museum to a hazy day, and I saw all his colors out there.

Animatronics exhibit at the Academy

All your favorite characters were on display at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These are the real deal. More convincing than CG. Look at Yoda. Look at Mighty Joe Young.

Great concept art and illustation were also on display at the Lobby gallery.

The exhibit is over, but you can still get the info at

El Capitan

We went to see Pirates of the Caribbean” Dean Man’s Chest at the El Capitan Theater. I love the organ “Mighty Wurlitzer” and the performance. The organist played the themes song and it was so fitting.

They also had props and costumes on display.

The movie was a lot of fun although alittle overboard on the gags and CG. I was rather confused about the plots and legends.

A dinner at Mel’s completed our Labor day.

Bill Perkin’s Color & Composition workshop #3

I wish we had more time than 3 days. He has so much information to cover, and unless you actuallty do them as you go, it’s hard to retain. Still being concious of notan versus chuiraroscuro, we did some complimentary colors and green gel light. the scariest of them all - green gel from the right, and red gel from the left!

Bill Perkin’s Color & Composition workshop #2

Today, we go into color. It is amazing the range of colors you can get with just the limited colors. Substituting veridian Green with Pthalo green and Alizeron Crimson with Rose madder was a new adjustment to me. Anyway, even with the addition of color, it is important to stick to your major statement - what Bill class “design matrix”.

Marshall’s animal drawing workshop is over. Usually after his workshops, I go into accoma due to info overload and brain malfunction. But this time I don’t have the luxury to because Bill Perkin’s workshop starts today!! August has been a heck of a workshop month.

today, we start with black and white. The idea of chiaroscuro and notan. Hi key and low key. Your major statement and secondary “stuff”

marshall’s animal anatomy #4

Tonight was the last day for this intense workshop. We covered neck and head, and other animals like cows, girraffe etc. Most of them are variations of horse and cats.

We were also introduced to H. Kley’s work. I had his book for a while, but I didn’t understand the significance and greatness of his work till today - after learning about animal anatomy etc.

Although I am glad the commute to Fullerton (during rush hours) is over, this was a workshop I wish didn’t end.
